General Shop Hazards

A machine shop is a potentially dangerous and unfortunately, sometimes deadly, place to work. Protect yourself by being aware of hazards and their causes. A few of which are listed below.

Eye Injuries

• Chips from machining operations
• Shrapnel from broken tools
• Chemicals splashed in eyes – chemical fumes
• Welding radiation
• Impact with protruding stock

Cuts, Abrasions

• Sharp edges on stock or workpiece
• Cutting tools
• Pinch points
• Chips from machining operations

Chemical Reactions/Burns

• Skin and eye contact
• Inhalation of nocuous fumes
• Explosion/fire

Slip and Fall Accidents

• Coolant and oil spills
• Metal grinding dust and wood sawdust
• Air hoses – electrical cords – welding cables – cluttered work area

Burns

• Hot glue gun and glue
• Chips from machining operations
• Workpiece heated by machining operations
• Molten metal casting
• Electric shock
• Welding radiation (ultraviolet)
• Hot materials and workpiece from welding or heat-treat operations

Impact

• Dropped tool or material
• Contact with protruding stock
• Workpiece ejected from the machine

Noise

• Air hose
• Machine noise
• Impact noise, such as hammering
